Choosing the right email marketing software for a business is a multi-faceted task. First, the designer portion of the program should allow both direct HTML programming as well as a selection of templates that can be used as a starting point. It should allow the insertion of a logo and have the ability to notify the designer if there are issues with their design that may prevent the email from displaying properly in certain email readers. The text portion should be able to automatically fill in the specific customer's name, which makes the email more personal and interesting. The best email marketing software also allows the user to manage bounced addresses, gives reports on which emails were opened and if any links contained in the email were followed, the amount of time the user spent looking at the email and whether it was forwarded.
